Unit 1 Assessment

In preparation for my Unit 1 on research, development and practices, I have consolidate my recent works and reflections throughout the last year. I intended to keep it simple with words and use more visuals to illustrate my practices:

LO1  – Formulate, describe and implement a challenging and self-directed programme of study, relating to your Project Proposal

First of all, I’m including a link to my first project proposal so to let you know my first draft, development and compare my transformation of the whole development process:

Project Proposal 1.0

At the very beginning I wanted to focus my practice on the topic of Daydream. It is a topic in relation to ‘Self and Emotions’ to the space and experiments around us. I focused on my experience of self in dwelling, the relations of emotions and space with the medium of ‘Daydream’. However, my direction shifted after the research paper I’ve done related to ‘Digital’ and ‘Reality’. However, it is not a complete new shifts, I understood that throughout the process, the ideas and developments are all connected to each other. Below is a mix of my major research and active research activities, which document as a process that leads to the final project proposal:

Mixed-media painting

I explored a lot with mixed-media paintings. The process of documentation from photography to digital paintings, altered and transformed back to a physical painting. I tried to layered artworks on real scenary creating ‘physical reality’, which is a great idea left to be developed when discussed with Jonathan in tutorial III.

Photography and documentation

Photography and daily snap documentation is a very important part of my creative process. It stimulates my thoughts and also, relate the daydreaming visuals to realistic images.

Materialization

Throughout the whole process I constantly explore on materials and different practices in various media. I explore on glass and transparent paint,  traditional stainless glass making workshops in Italy given me a deep understanding on the process of glassmaking, also a better knowledge on the skill and material of transparent glass. Nevertheless I tried to explore more on video and screens as shown below:

Research on Artists

It was fascinating for me to know about the vision of this Russian Art group at the very beginning of unit 1 practice. The above post and mid-point review mentioned how this artist group influences my practices and aim. After all I have encountered a few artists, which lead me to explore more on digital art (intangiblility) and physical art

I have to say the artist research above helped me to gain lot more knowledge about the context of my practice and inspire me to another stage of practices. I’m still at the moment to decide the kind of work I want to make for future practices, however, this is the major direction I’ve consolidate after the Unit one:

Project proposal 2.0

LO2 – Critically engage with practice-based research and contribute actively to debate and discussion

This is a symposium to introduce myself and a initial introduction to my work. By looking at others work I learnt from different practices of artists and also document my growth over a year time.

Considering Active research has a huge part of Unit one development, it forged me to maintain high level of creativity, meeting deadline to deliver final pieces. I worked basically with a mindmap, sketches, photographs documentations, material sourcing and it I believe it is the creative process that matters as documented below:

General practices

Physical + Digital pieces

In each year we will have a low-residency with our fellow artist creating collaborated works and this year particular interested me which related to my practice is the workshop with Artist Terence Quinn:

In  discussion and tutorials with my tutor Jonathan and Gareth is particular useful for my practices. The suggestions, research paper and exhibition listed  pushes me to reflect upon myself, and also the feedback of my fellows to improve and so on, art is never alone and shouldn’t be. For working as in communication or own subjective, still we need audience, as an reflection in which it is substantially useful for my future practices.Underneath is the sessions I’ve chosen relevant to my practices :

LO3 – Critically reflect upon your practice and articulate a clear understanding of methodology and context of your creative practice

Research Readings

  • Way of seeing
  • Virtual Window

Overall, I have to say that the research paper was quite a challenge for me, specially because I tend to keep a wide perspective and keep morphing and expanding my practices, however, at the end, I felt that I was expanded on my toipcs through a  research on this subject which is very beneficial to my practice. To be honest, it has also encouraged me to keep reading and writing a lot, as an artist, it is actually essential.
